Just a little (link) love: Family & Compromises Edition

June 18, 2014

LinkLive

Everywhere we look, we have to make compromises for or with our families. Sometimes the choices are good and we are glad to have made them (leaving my parents’ home to support them from afar instead), sometimes they feel impossible (being the innards of a sandwich generation supporting your own new family and your parents). Sometimes, even if you know you’re doing the right thing, it’s an almighty wrench to do so.

Some friends of ours are struggling with similar choices: they have a lovely family but the tug of war between raising that family and supporting that family is putting an enormous strain on the marriage. It’s tough.

CAREER + MONEY THINGS

Have any of you tried the TSA PreCheck thing? $85 a year sounds like a terrible bargain for the services you don’t actually get.

I don’t get to read blogs all that often anymore, so I was delighted to discover Mortgage Free in Three. I love the cozy homemaking found therein, and particularly the realistic food planning. I’m forever battling against food waste: we love fresh veggies but need five “good” days in a row to make sure we use up a full week’s worth of produce without having to toss any.

Kids, Money, Working: eemusings tries to figure out the balance thing.

How do you feel about Donate buttons? I think I share Abby’s feeling of not actually being willing to have one on the site even if we are feeling squeezed (between the dependent dad, the ill sibling, the two aging canines who need care, among other things – things I have to remind myself of when I wonder where the HECK all our money is going).  I do understand why people have suggested she add one since she’s going through a rough time at the moment, though, those who care feel helpless.

SaverSpender gave up a huge – HUGE- contract to stay home with her Baby Bun – these compromises get harder when you can actually put a price tag on it.

Funny About Money on the Delusion / Illusion of Being in Control. Boy howdy do I know this feeling!

FUN THINGS

A thing about frogs I find way too funny. From NPR.

Anne Wheaton on a real ’70s childhood summer.
As an ’80s kid, I don’t even remember my parents telling us to be home at any time, we were just running around til we dropped, fought til we bled, or came running home guiltily after trapping one of the cousins in something. Hooligans. Probably it helped keep us close to home that we were all poor in a poor neighborhood where owning a bike was unusual. Having no allowance kept the whole junk food thing to a minimum as well, except for the infamous Jello incident that led to Mom’s aversion therapy to shut up our fighting over food ever again.

I love this bed “under the stairs” thing. But there’s a part of me that wants there to be more shelves built into the walls of the bed area, because otherwise you just lost a whole lot of shelf space and that makes me sad.

THINKING THINGS

I despise Facebook generally but this is useful to know: Gizmodo on how to stop FB from using your browser history.

The anti-bacterial soap and hand wash craze has always made me wonder if it made sense to scrub ourselves so prolifically with the stuff, apparently science+Minnesota are quite certain it’s a bad idea and should be banned now.

Cats semi-bullying dogs is always a bit funny.

Tell me about it. *sobs quietly*…

There’ll be other contracts. *crosses fingers and anything that can be crossed*

  2. Thanks for the Link Love! Nice list of links, BTW…

Another good reason to stay away from Facebook, thank you very much! LOL! The opt-out program Gizmodo describes works by installing cookies in your browser. Presumably every time you clear cookies, you have to go back to the site and re-opt out. Like we have nothing but time to fiddle with stuff like that. I believe AdBlocker Plus has a function that interferes with people tracking your browser history. Love Adblocker: it gets rid of all those annoying YouTube and news video ads in addition to squelching almost all pop-ups.
