CAREER + MONEY THINGS

I loved Leigh’s update. So many numbers, charts, percentages!

May everyone’s quarter century mark in their career be as awesome as Scalzi’s.

Being productive through Forcing Functions. I used to do this thing with limited laptop power and all but it was annoying and eventually found that artificially forcing things is never as effective as mentally saying: Get This Done NOW. I’m very much an intrinsically motivated person, so much so that imposing extrinsic motivation can be detrimental to the cause. You?

Even when we were poor, we gave gifts to our teachers. Because we come from a culture that highly valued them.

“If everyone benefits from childcare, everyone pays for childcare. Period.”

You don’t look like a programmer.” These sorts of dismissive experiences described are so incredibly common, so depressingly common, that I remember hearing it as far back as when I was only 6 or 7. For me, it was “You don’t look like you’d read comics.” or “You don’t look like you’d understand this.” I can’t remember all of my responses but I’d bet money that my response was something totally socially unacceptable like “I don’t look like I could kick your ass either, but guess what?” Worked for me as a kid but not so useful in the professional world.

INTERESTING THINGS

What the F*ck, Iago?: “If demonic intervention does not explain why Iago’s such a dick, and if Iago refuses to explain his motives, are we left with an unresolvable problem?”

The missing history of Ravensbruck, The Nazi concentration camp for women: “At its height, Ravensbrück had a population of about 45,000 women; over the six years of its existence around 130,000 women passed through its gates, to be beaten, starved, worked to death, poisoned, executed and gassed. Estimates of the final death toll have ranged from about 30,000 to 90,000; the real figure probably lies somewhere in between, but so few SS documents on the camp survive nobody will ever know for sure.”

Outbreak of microcephaly in Brazil, that’s rather terrifying.

Have you heard of Making a Murderer? I had only heard comments from people watching it so this is an interesting insight into the docuseries.

  1. Good lord! I wonder if the mosquito-borne disease is what happened to the woman who’s been in the news with the microcephalic baby? Could she have been in Brazil during her pregnancy? Or…is there something going on that we don’t know about?

“You don’t look like you’d understand this”? Really? How about “I don’t look like I have a hell of a right punch, either, Jerkowitz”?

Or it could be spreading from Brazil :/

I have no patience for sexism in the workplace anymore, not that I was filled with an abundance of it before, but honestly, is there no limit to how condescending and crappy people can get? (Don’t answer that)
