CAREER + MONEY THINGS

Eric Flint, rather sensibly, on the business of publishing: …in order for an author to make a living from the sale of his or her books in a form that brings income, those relatively small number of income-deriving book sales have to be surrounded by a huge penumbra of book acquisitions which bring no direct income at all.

INTERESTING THINGS

Not a surprise, not even a little: Once cowardly road-ragers realize I’m a man, they quickly back off.

Black funeral homes are disappearing and with them, parts of the black mourning culture

HopSkipDrive: hahahha no, I won’t send LB in the car with anyone but myself or PiC, I’m most certainly never putting hir in a car with a stranger booked by app. Signed, Yes of COURSE I’m overprotective, why are you surprised?

I had no idea that airlines have the option of training their crew to spot sex trafficking

Woman’s husband pays for her murder, but SHE gets backlash over reporting him?? OF COURSE.

Rukundo said that Kalala tried to kill her because he thought she was going to leave him for another man — an accusation she denies.

But her trials are not yet over. Rukundo told the ABC she’s gotten backlash from Melbourne’s Congolese community for reporting Kalala to the police. Someone left threatening messages for her, and she returned home one day to find her back door broken. She now has eight children to raise alone and has asked the Department of Human Services to help her find a new place to live.

  1. Corgicorn! 😀 How DO you find all these amazing posts?????

In fact, when my son was in grade school and I had a job where I wasn’t allowed to leave until about 6 p.m. (or later), we hired a taxicab company to pick him up at school (private: no bus service) and drive him to the day-care lady. Today I kinda cringe about that, but…really, the only other choice was that I’d have had to quit my job, and since my husband lost his just at the time we moved to a new house that tripled our mortgage payments, that was not an option.

Interesting Road & Track story. And ain’t it the truth. A certain kind of wannabe thug figures he can get away with harassing and possibly even assaulting random women, but will back down when circumstances change even slightly. Years ago when I was young and pretty and a constant target of harassment, I discovered to my astonishment that having a German shepherd at my side was exactly as effective at stopping that sh!t as having a man with me. Apparently even a dog can exert enough ownership over a female take her out of the “fair game” category..

      Good luck 😀

D’you know, though, I think I’ve heard of people doing that before. I guess the idea was that a cab company was going to be more trustworthy and I could see that being the case way back when. These days, I wouldn’t trust a cabbie but I wouldn’t look askance at you for having made that choice.

MEN. Certain men, cowards, really, are the bane of society, I swear. I was noticing the same effect recently. I almost always walk with Seamus so I forget what hooligans are right here in our own neighborhood and was sharply reminded of the fact when I had to race out the door with just the baby. A pox on those men.

The KLM dog is just made up, and it is a good thing – I might start leaving things on the plane on purpose if they were returned to me in that fashion, and I can’t be the only one!

So many good dog links with the uni-corgy and half marathoner! Awwww!

And, thanks for the link! Somewhat unstable, but great for now.
