Just a little (link) love: Register to vote edition

I am the dream, the local kid who did good. But nobody tells you what it’s like, the incredible loneliness that accompanies that kind of class jumping that many people dream of.

My code isn’t nearly as starkly and obviously different as the author’s was, but I can relate to this. No one in my family understands what I do because I didn’t take the accounting or engineering paths. That’s as white collar as we get in a family only one generation removed from backbreaking farming in a rural countryside of a recently 2nd world country. Grandma (who was pure awesome) worked that farm until she was 83, stooped and yet somehow taller and more regal than anyone else I knew.

First day of school dressing – I still have the same approach to dressing for the first day of work.  It’s for me, not for anyone else who won’t have a clue what I wore or what I looked like.

INTERESTING THINGS

I think transparency is our best bet to get people to acknowledge the ongoing racism, antisemitism, sexism, and anti-intellectualism in our society.

Square made November 8th a company holiday to enable voting.

Africa is a continent, not a country

I grew up in Guess culture but have learned to add some Ask, especially professionally, and generally I find that Ask is easier to navigate except when I forget that someone is professionally halfAsk and halfGuess. COMPLICATIONS ENSUE: In Ask culture, people grow up believing they can ask for anything – a favour, a pay rise– fully realising the answer may be no. In Guess culture, by contrast, you avoid “putting a request into words unless you’re pretty sure the answer will be yes… A key skill is putting out delicate feelers. If you do this with enough subtlety, you won’t have to make the request directly; you’ll get an offer. Even then, the offer may be genuine or pro forma; it takes yet more skill and delicacy to discern whether you should accept.”

Houston losing their bid for the Olympics was probably good. I’m really glad that San Francisco lost to London, I’d hate living here during the Games or in the aftermath. Having a permanent site makes the most sense to me.

  2. That class article is similar to DH’s experience, except I wonder if him being male has made it ok for him to get a Ph.D. and leave. Nobody expected him to stay home. Though really everyone with a college degree leaves his hometown.

Possible! I think people have this narrative that “males grow up and fly away looking for whatever, females nest at home and are found as mates”, it’s not overt but I’ve definitely seen that attitude reflected in how our community raised their kids.
