Just a little (link) love: remembering Carrie Fisher edition

CAREER + MONEY THINGS

I tell all women I talk career with NEGOTIATE NEGOTIATE NEGOTIATE, even when I’m just interviewing young women to the workforce, so you can imagine how excited I am for Ms ONL to hear that she negotiated and got more!

Hayao Miyazaki on the dehumanizing work of a studio animation:

“I can’t watch this and think it’s interesting,” Miyazaki said. “The people who make this are probably doing it without being considerate of things like pain. This is extremely unpleasant.”

“If you really want to make something disturbing, then just go off and do it, that’s all there is to it, and I absolutely don’t think this is something I’d want to connect to the work we do,” Miyazaki said. “It really feels like it’s some sort of insult toward life.”

I fully agree with this. I have relatives confined to wheelchairs, bed-ridden, or unable to lift even a hand. Their movements and attempts at speech could easily be described as “grotesque”, by someone who has no soul or capacity for empathy, and this animation work feels much like an extension of that. It’s heartening that Studio Ghibli isn’t buying into this.

I’ve always known that listening to music, actually listening to it, when I work is too distracting. I am fine when it’s background noise that I’m ignoring but if I’m in any way paying attention, it’s too much a distraction. That’s why I choose noise that I can ignore rather than music I enjoy for my workday.

HAPPY THINGS

Zizek Game: This can be mean but also very funny under the right circumstances.

A much better version of “Baby it’s cold outside” which I had always found creepy.

THINKING THINGS

I’m heartsore over the passing of Carrie Fisher. I had so hoped 2016 would spare us this blow. I should have known better.

“I’m a PEZ dispenser and I’m in the Abnormal Psychology textbook. Who says you can’t have it all?”
– Carrie Fisher.

Carrie Fisher’s work on scripts, and not doing work for free.

Carrie on bipolar disorder.

Carrie interviewing Daisy Ridley.

I loved her honesty.

Carrie to Princess Leia

Considered iconic for her role in Star Wars, she was so much more than Princess Leia and those most memorable moments. In the Star Wars universe, she also became more than a rebel leader. She became General Organa, a natural step for a brilliant character played by a brilliant woman, undefeated by her losses. Behind that was the knowledge that as Carrie Fisher, the woman, she was undiminished by the battles she fought then too.
