CAREER + MONEY THINGS

I work from home. This is me but jammies and eating all day is not a problem. *snort*

Penny moved home after college, that made sense. In my family, going away for college wasn’t normal, forget moving out on your own.

This was a big kick in the pants that I can’t relax on the money front – we got our estate plan set up and I rested on my laurels for a bit. Then I started researching better priced life insurance policies, and rested a little more. It’s time to research long term disability policies!

When did you realize that money could buy your freedom? Ms. Montana talks about her flash point, and I shared mine too.

HAPPY THINGS

Someday, we will do remote travel and it will be glorious! Or we’ll enjoy photos because I’m old, tired, and ouchy 🙂 Whatever.

Morgan Jenkins has a wonderful piece in the New Yorker reviving the legacy of Jessie Fauset

THINKING THINGS

We die from white ignorance. We die from white refusal.” I can’t properly sum up the power of this piece. Please just read it.

Why does the US still allow girls -children- be married off with parental consent whether or not they want to be married, as young as age 12???

If you’re inclined to help immigration services helping other people, see this listing.

This Captain Awkward post is a perfect example of why I told coworkers nothing about my personal life for years. They didn’t know ANYTHING about me and that’s just how I like it.

Yay…we’re getting a servant!

  1. Wow. Minimum age of consent in the extremely sex positive state I grew up in is 16. I thought lowest nationally would be like 14 or 15. Goodness gracious.

@Taylor: I cannot fathom how/why it seems ok to allow girls to get married specifically with parental consent but complete disregard for the GIRL’s consent. And 12? They’re CHILDREN.

Yikes is right re: a 12 year old bride. Somehow that is OK, but Islam is the real issue keeping women down?? The hypocrisy astounds.

Holy heck that coworker issue is insane! I’d happily talk about vacation and travel plans rather than my *actual* personal life at work. Maybe I should reconsider!

At my workplace (a University research arm), they are really just so nosy! They have nothing better to do, it seems. We are required to do a lot of traveling and fieldwork with colleagues–personal stuff just comes up when you’re stuck in a car for 12 hours over a 2 day period. I try to keep everything to myself and vague, but it is super annoying to get those questions, e.g. “so you must not have any big Valentine’s Day plans to be on this trip, huh?” my answer: “nothing that couldn’t be rescheduled.” and then more and more and more prodding, and me just changing the subject to avoid discussing my personal life, and getting ruder and ruder.

Earlier this week an old colleague (whom I was NEVER close to) rejoined the team, hotdesking right next to me, and asked me how I was now. I answered, filling her in about my work life. Then I got questions, “but what about your personal life, has anything changed there? any partners? kids?” and she proceeded to tell me about her “gorgeous new partner” and his various talents and then looked at me like I was supposed to share something equally personal in return. I feign being really really busy but it is difficult. Short of plopping my earphones on while she is still talking I don’t know what to do.

The worst is when my officemate starts to cry or people I am not friends with at work come by “just to chat.” N.O. Zero interest in your personal issues, wish you had the same courtesy for me. (I’m not a monster, but this girl cries like 3x a week. About the SAME GD THING. I have no patience for this at work, and we are NOT friends.)

I’m a master at being vague but SHEESH. At some point I’m going to have to start being very rude to colleagues, supervisors, and higher ups. (This nosiness/blurring of professional and personal is also why I work from home A LOT.)

@Sense: The hypocrisy astounds AND abounds!

Your coworkers sound positively horrifying to me. I have been lucky to be able to fend off most nosy people with the most boring and bland responses and turning the questions on them. MOST people on fishing expeditions are easily distracted by an invitation to natter on about themselves: “Oh no, I don’t celebrate {whatever}, not my thing. Why, do you? What are you up to?”

The fishers who are just setting you up for telling their own stories are usually looking for praise and admiration which also drives me up the wall but that’s a little easier than telling them anything about myself.

Or the chatters, and the criers…. holy mackeral what a nightmare.
