Good Things Friday (103) and Link Love

February 5, 2021

1. FINALLY got Comcast to credit my account $75 for the weeks of no service and for the horrible customer service. That’s one month paid for.

2. I got Smol Acrobat to nap in their cradle for almost three hours, once!! This was huge. Enormous.

3. Painful as it is, memories of Seamus keep coming back to me. On his last days, his senses were fading to the extent that he would routinely check my hands for treats because he wasn’t SURE if I was offering one or not. Very gently, he would nip my fingers to check. Even when he was biting me, it was gentle, inquisitive and funny. A nose bumped against my hand, and then little teeth nibbled at my fingers. I had to laugh and say no no, *I* am not your treat! I don’t have anything! And then because you don’t naysay Seamus, I’d go find him a treat.

He was such a sharer. He so enjoyed spending time with his sitter and her dogs. On the rare occasions that we had to travel without him, we’d get pictures of them all lounging on his bed, a literal doggy pile, together because they loved to cuddle and especially loved his bed. We could never board him at a facility after that first time we had to, we always looked for a home where he’d have doggy friends to spend time with during our absence.

He was never jealous of anyone, he just found a place for himself. I admired that about him so much.

4. After months of procrastinating and hours of effort, I finally revived my old iPad. I fully intended to do it for JB’s school year but after running into a few walls, I didn’t have the time to spare until now. JB has enjoyed borrowing it for virtual playdates.

Challenges this week: Grieving.

Just a little link love

Thanks to Jenny for sharing this article about the home heating crisis that is seriously affecting Indigenous elders. The article shared Chizh for Cheii (Firewood for Grandfather), a volunteer program that supplies Navajo elders with firewood, and I later ran across their fundraiser on Twitter. I’m so glad to see there are ways to help.

Really glad that DbF left work when he did.

Fixating on Pandemic “Learning Loss” Undermines the Need to Transform Education. I have long thought our educational system is broken and even more so now. Wouldn’t it be something if we could actually take this opportunity to make a new, vastly improved, normal? My cynical side doubts it will happen but we can try…

The birthday rule sounds ridiculous: When a child is born into a family in which both parents have insurance through their jobs, the parents are supposed to “coordinate benefits” — meaning they must tell both insurers that their child is eligible for coverage under two plans. The parents might be forgiven for thinking they have some say in how their child will be insured. In most cases, they don’t.

Instead, a child with double health insurance eligibility must take as primary coverage the plan of the parent whose birthday comes first in the calendar year; the other parent’s insurance is considered secondary. This model regulation was set by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners and adopted by most states, including Kansas, says Lee Modesitt, director of government affairs with the Kansas Insurance Department.

  1. Thank you for sharing that story about Seamus. It was a touching story and made me miss having furry family members.

The panda video was delightful. He/she sure seems to fall/get hit on the head a lot! 🤦‍♀️
