Good Things Friday (112) and Link Love

April 9, 2021

1. We were desperate for a reset at the end of last week and by some minor miracle, we got one. We both got “enough” rest (completely relative to what’s normal) on Friday night. Smol was willing to nap a reasonably long time on Saturday morning. I was able to play with JB during Smol’s second nap, PiC was able to get some exercise and some work done. I got a little work done. I got a little rest while JB played with Smol. We ran a few errands. It was imperfectly perfect. There wasn’t enough time for deep work but many more boxes got ticked off than would normally have been. It felt like a gift.

2. The bad thing about using a spare Arlo camera for a baby monitor is that it drains batteries like WOW. Which led us to a bit of crisis when our charging dock just quit charging the batteries. The good things are: I figured out how to fix the charging problem and it’s shown me that I do actually prefer the ability to see the baby on my desktop instead of on its own screen so if all other things are equal and there is an option to stream the feed to my computer, I would like that. Previously, I assumed that was not something I’d care for so I’m glad the experiment with the temporary Arlo camera gave me a chance to test that assumption.

3. I played with JB in the backyard! I never have the time or energy to do that. I massively overdid it and my legs and hips are done with me. But it was fun at the time.

4. My friend is teaching a course over at The Beau Monde and since it’ll be conducted asynchronously and I won’t be taking the seat of a real / aspiring romance writer, I signed up for her class just to learn how the peerage actually works.

Challenges this week: Alas our reset button was only good for 36 hours. I’m glad we got it but boy do I wish it lasted longer.

My physical and mental health are slowly circling the drain.

Just a little link love

Feds put city of Portland on formal notice of non-compliance with Justice Dept. settlement agreement. This is the first time I’ve ever seen a city being taken to task for their numerous unlawful and unconstitutional acts committed by the police and the internal power structure that’s always justified those acts and protected the police from consequences for their clearly wrong actions. In this report of one time period (during the protests) alone, they documented over 6000 cases of use of force. The examples highlighted were egregious, up and down the chain of command.

There are so many attacks on trans people right now:

  1. I don’t claim to be a peerage expert but I once chucked an otherwise pretty good romance novel across the metaphorical room because the author decided that an unlegitimized child born out of wedlock could magically be the heir to a scottish title. (If they had been legitimized *by a later marriage* it would have been fine! I personally don’t give a toss whose parents are or are not married but this is how it works!)

Lol, I lost all respect for a book when an adoptive mother’s custody was suddenly challenged by the revelation that the bio father’s signature had been forged on the original adoption release by the deceased bio mother – but a judge told them that rather than having the courts involved in a custody determination, the adoptive mother & bio father could just get married in front of him right then & there and that would magically solve everything.

@Jenny: Whaaaaaat! Even I know it doesn’t work that way!
