Good Things Friday (190) and Link Love
October 14, 2022
1. I normally do all the laundry and run the dishwasher. I quite enjoy the former and happen to be best placed to note when the latter is ready, but PiC did all of it this weekend before I could decide where to slot it into my day. Part of me wanted to be annoyed he stole my jobs, but I’m choosing to focus on the fact that when I’m extra tired and need a hand, my partner is going to step up and that doesn’t mean I’m lesser for it.
2. JB’s been participating fully in their self defense classes and that makes me feel good about the time and money we’re spending on them.
3. Marian Call is having a living room concert! Join the concert, pay-as-you-can, replay available for 24 hours.
Before we had kids, we went to Marian Call’s intimate concerts at Comic Con and she was absolutely wonderful. Support a fantastic Alaskan musician!
Challenges this week: still sick. 🤢
I can eat real sweets now but not a lot, so I need a group to do a cookie tasting like this: I Finally Tried Crumbl Cookies
Bitches get Riches: You’re Saving Too Much Money in Your Emergency Fund… And You Might Not Need It at All. I go back and forth on this topic a lot.Where do you rate yourself on risk tolerance, social support, and financial adaptability?
The Honey Witch, By Kathryn McMahon
Given my mental meanderings about retirement, I very much enjoy that Purple continues to share her adventures in retirement.
Missing Person (CW: loss, grief, self harm)
“Don’t spy on a privacy lab” (and other career advice for university provosts): “What’s the “shitty tech adoption curve?” It’s the process by which oppressive technologies are normalized and spread. If you want to do something awful with tech – say, spy on people with a camera 24/7 – you need to start with the people who have the least social capital, the people whose objections are easily silenced or overridden.” A) I maintain that Siri and Alexa and whatever else are NOT allowed in our home. B) This was an excellent read. Go Grad Students!
An interesting morality question and an interesting related read: Life on the slippery Earth, Aztec moral philosophy has profound differences from the Greek tradition, not least its acceptance that nobody is perfect. What do you suppose? Is it better to do something good because you wanted to or because someone told you to? (I also don’t think I understood the definition of “better” here. How is one better than another? Isn’t it better to do it the good thing, period, regardless of why? Or is it in the context of “are YOU a better person if….”? But I’m also not particularly good at grasping and examining philosophy, I slept through much of that class because I was working too much in college.)
The hunt for Alejandro Suarez: A Miami man decided to move out. A massive uproar ensued. This mom is a real piece of work. And one really good example of why we’re advised not to share missing persons posts on social media, or help people asking about missing persons if you don’t know they’re legitimate and not abusers.
TDIH, on Feb.. 4, 1913, Rosa Parks was born. Her grandfather was a supporter of Marcus Garvey; when Klan violence escalated after WWI, he would sit out at night with his shotgun to protect their family home. As a 6 year old, she would sometimes sit vigil with him. pic.twitter.com/cUf6xe0xkL

I tried Crumbl Cookies a few weeks ago…it was ok, but not worth the price. I think it’s more about the novelty than anything else. For that what they’d charge, I’d rather get cookies from a real bakery.
Oh good to know!
Aw shucks. Thanks for including us!!!
You’re welcome!
My grandma was just visiting and we went over her financials (she asked, she is 88 but mentally sharp as ever) and I suggested she put most of her emergency fund into a favorable short term CD! She also has me and my mom to help in any emergency.
Ours is down to $5000 because the cash flow is high enough it doesn’t matter much.
What a gift that she is able to discuss these things with you, and that she has both of you in case of any emergency.
How long could you go without regular income? I wonder how low I can handle going with our emergency funds in the years to come.
