Good Things Friday (195) and Link Love

November 18, 2022

1. We’re surviving. It’s been a hard week.

Challenges this week: Twitter being in an apparent death spiral is incredibly depressing. It’s provided me real time support and community in so many ways that were impossible for me to obtain offline and I hate that it’s being destroyed by a billionaire egomaniac for no other reason than he’s a giant baby in an adult body. Please check out Celeste Pewter’s action items.

This is a good point: “Toyoda and other company executives have said all-electric vehicles aren’t viable for many drivers – especially in the foreseeable future – as not all areas of the world will adopt EVs at the same pace due to the high cost of the vehicles as well as a lack of infrastructure.”

I still remember an exodus from a social group I belonged to and how sad I felt – and that must be 15-20 years ago. This Twitter implosion will be very painful for many – but it sure is gripping to watch.

I think my next car will be a plug-in hybrid, which means it can run fully electric around town yet still support gas tank powered road trips. I’m a single-car household so hesitate to go all electric, yet I don’t want to buy just gas engines anymore. I tend to keep each car a long time (I’m on my 3rd car in 25 years of car ownership!) so hopefully I’m still a few years out from a purchase and engines/batteries will be even better by then.

    • We love our Honda Clarity! (Which is a plugin hybrid.)

I hate how much good we’re going to lose because of losing Twitter. There are many connections, and so many life and death situations you can only really get updated on in real time through Twitter (storm warnings and the like). It was deeply flawed but still had a great deal of utility.

I think we’re likely to be staying with the hybrid when we do finally get the next car, for similar reasons. We can’t be a single car household with two young kids and the dog, though I have considered trying it. I had to accept that whenever we’re down a car, we need a backup right away. We’ve had several car problems this year.

Bravo you! I’m on my second car of my own but that doesn’t count cars I’ve purchased for family and shared the use of, back when.
