Good Things Friday (209) and Link Love
February 24, 2023
1. A Twitter friend shared the story of surprising her back up at work with a gift (cookies) to thank her and how it seemed silly to her that the recipient was so surprised. Another friend joked (or said seriously, tone is hard to tell) that Californians aren’t used to Southern hospitality.
She’s probably right! I don’t know what counts as Southern hospitality. But as a Californian, I can take a hint. I had been wanting to express my gratitude to my second in command for always being solid (especially during times I’ve very much been on shaky mental grounds though I tend to mask all of that at work) so I borrowed the idea and sent my deputy a gift card for some treats of their choice.
2. @celeste_pewter is having some medical troubles and needs a helping hand: Medical bills help for vision treatment. I donated as a small thank you for all the political action advice she’s offered free over the years.
3. We supported this campaign to Sponsor Orphans and Poor Students Education: Year 1. They had enough to get the kids started, but they’ll need a lot more to carry on the rest of the school year. One month of education per child is $47 USD.
Update about Sponsor Orphans Education: Year 1 campaign:
We have enrolled 11 (9 boys & 3 Girls) orphans to a private school on Feb 11, 2023. Help us reach this target and ensure their education continues without any interference. Donate now ⬇️

I realize that matters of citizenship can be tricky but if you’re aware that it’s highly likely a teen was trafficked, how do you (humanely) justify punishing them by stripping their citizenship? I suppose I expected there to be some sense of responsibility for someone who was young and vulnerable to something like trafficking or sex trafficking, especially if they hadn’t harmed anyone: Shamima Begum loses appeal against removal of British citizenship
Airlines just keep making life stressful. Can you imagine? Polish airline told violinist to either store €5 million Stradivarius in hold, or not get on the plane
I have friends who aren’t Extremely Online or even dialed into the news much for various reasons and I’d been wanting to share JKR’s active harm to trans people: JK Rowling’s Anti-Transgender Stance And Hogwarts Legacy

Kids-for-cash judges ordered to pay more than $200M: my first thought was “good but will they actually have to pay?” The article says: “It’s unlikely the now-adult victims will see even a fraction of the eye-popping damages award, but a lawyer for the plaintiffs said it’s a recognition of the enormity of the disgraced judges’ crimes.” In which case, what’s the point?? They should have to pay. They should have to spend all their remaining time making things right for their victims. Without having contact with them, of course.
Cough related sympathies. I finally went abd got antibiotics and steroids for my 15 day long cough! Lungs, man. They get angry so easily.
Your poor lungs! I hope the antibiotics and steroids are helping you? I got the codeine cough syrup and I can breathe now so that’s new!
Thank you- they’re improving and I’m glad you got the good cough syrup! I once got bronchitis in the UK and they gave me, no kidding, 700 mL of the stuff. I can still hear my kind host saying apologetically “I’m afraid it will be a bit dear since you aren’t on [some NHS thing] – six pounds” (about $10.50 at the time, and of course the NHS visit was $0) and I laughed until I started wheezing again.
Well now I’m wheezing again too XD
