Good Things Friday (222) and Link Love
May 26, 2023
1. I had my weekly therapy session, PiC had his weekly (when he can, this depends on friends showing up) sportsy outing. These are both good for our health.
2. We walked the whole family to the local park on Sunday for outdoor time. That was good for everyone though I crashed hard a couple hours after we got back. Impromptu nap!
Helping folks:
From a dear friend… My friend’s partner needs a new car or repairs because rural Minnesota. They teach ASL and drive folks just a little older than them all over. (They’ve been stuck at this funded level of $1000 for 2 months, can we help them out?)
These poor dogs got QUILLED. Can we help their family with the vet bill?
I follow @tinytempest on Twitter and she’s fundraising for family in a tough spot. Emergency Help for the Byrd – Bradford Family.
‘There was all sorts of toxic behaviour’: Timnit Gebru on her sacking by Google, AI’s dangers and big tech’s biases: The Ethiopian-born computer scientist lost her job after pointing out the inequalities built into AI. But after decades working with technology companies, she knows all too much about discrimination
Three ways I’m teaching my son about money
Y’all know that I’ve always kept our personal details private, especially the kids, since I started blogging nearly 15 years ago. This is very much my stance for my kids: “Some new parents feel there’s no excuse for subjecting children to invasive public scrutiny.” We tell JB that information that goes on the internet is forever, you can never pull that back. In my work, I see people behaving horribly unethically and scraping data and pictures off the internet for all kinds of “research” and reuse in not great ways. Not that I doubted myself but this supports that position: The First Social-Media Babies Are Growing Up—And They’re Horrified
Oh, yay for therapy, time at the park, and a nap! It sounds like the perfect trifecta.
It is! I should plan on those more often.
Yay for therapy! I will probably be restarting later this year…
Yeah – I guess that’s why I turned my IG private. And I guess with generative AI now…
Speaking of which, thanks for the Gebru link – I’ve been wondering when we might hear more about that saga – it went a bit quiet for awhile. Went down an AI reading rabbit hole this weekend starting from news about that open letter about stopping all development…
Double yay for restarting therapy! It’s so good for us.
I guess I didn’t think of IG the same way, mostly because it doesn’t strike me as a tell-all forum like blogs can be but that very well may be simply because I have no clue what it’s really like.
You’re welcome!
