Just a little (link) love: hummingbird mistakes edition
May 28, 2020
If you’d like to join me in helping Lakota families and/or rural libraries this year, please read this post. Over 6 weeks in 2019, we raised $2669.94 for the Lakota families, touching 27 lives. What can we do in 2020?
Current total: Lakota, $1,570.70; Rural libraries, $321.62.
How are you adjusting your budget during COVID?
I’m staring at Mt Emotional Health, feeling a bit unequal to the task. The days were very long but at some point it feels like the fast forward was pushed and I’m not ready to keep up with this pace.
I often feel like this hummingbird

Oh my goodness, those baby hummingbirds will be sooo dizzy! š Mostly what we’ve done with our budget is just given ourselves conscious permission to spend whatever we need to for our physical & psychological heath. And surprisingly enough, so far it has actually balanced out! The amount we overspend on groceries is the same amount we haven’t spent on gas, and not paying for field trips meant we had more $ for buying educational books. We donated 25% of our stimulus checks and set aside 25% for local-economy purchases, and feeling like we’re doing our part to help others has helped us feel better about life in general.
Mt Emotional Health is indeed a challenging climb, especially when you’re also climbing your own Mental Health Mountain. I just try to remember that Hallmark cards are fake. No matter what my perfectionism tries to tell me, it is actually impossible to be a Perfect Parent – I just need to try to be a good one. And that showing kids by example how to acknowledge mistakes, apologize, and make an earnest effort to do better is one of the most important life lessons they will ever receive.
I’m glad that the money is balancing out for you! It’s taking us a little while to figure out our equilibrium.
Yeah I try not to let myself get sucked into the belief I need to be perfect. Just better.
