Good Things Friday (153) and Link Love

January 28, 2022

1. If you’re a direct aid giving type of person, Quiara is good people. Everything in life is getting increasingly expensive and it’s harder to make a very set income stretch.

2. I pulled a batch of Peanut Butter Banana Oatmeal Bars from the freezer, apparently I froze them back in 2020! 😬 They were still perfect though, and JB was Very Concerned that I didn’t remember where the recipe came from. Thank goodness I had blogged about it!

Just a little link love

My friend made this!

Winter Sleeps (contains dog pics!)

The IRS has made tax season even worse, somehow. “This year though, we have the added bonus of the IRS requiring you to scan your face to file taxes online.” Who do we have to yell at about this? This is absolutely crap, if they’re really trying to pull this nonsense.

Colonialism, Education, and Hope: Reflections on MLK Day 2022

Because of the TikTok below, I looked up the Bikini Atoll bombings and am not at all surprised that History.com didn’t bother to mention ANY of the effects of the testing on the people who lived there.

Texas Rabbi who was held hostage says we can’t live in fear. “We can’t forget about who we are. Hospitality means the world.”

Wow, I love that washing machine! Thanks for finding/sharing that video.

Hmm, I was going to say I don’t remember having to upload a selfie to ID.me to register but that might be because I uploaded my passport (you already need to use it to get a realID compliant license in CA and I think also to renew global entry). I was going to say once it’s set up it’s painless to use but that doesn’t matter if you can’t get it up and functioning. And the principle of having to sign up and give all your information to a third party company to file taxes is not ok. I’m also still mad the IRS doesn’t let you enter both spouses on estimated payments the way the FTB does (and also that this would be a non-issue if our accountant would just put me as the primary taxpayer).

What did you need to use ID.me for in the past? I’m trying to remember why it seemed familiar-ish but I still very much object to using selfies and third party verifications for accessing our tax information or just to file.

Your accountant won’t put you as the primary taxpayer?? That’s so weird.

I needed it to upload things to renew my driver’s license last year, and I’m pretty sure I had to use it to renew Global Entry also (I could be mis-remembering that part). For the license you *could* get around it by taking all your documents to the DMV in person, standing in the no-appointment line, and hoping nobody had an issue with them, which I was not ok with.

The accountant is all kinds of patriarchy annoying. They also send everything paper addressed to husband and teresa husband’s-last-name even though they obviously know my last name because THEY DO OUR TAXES. And send all emails to my husband and don’t cc me even though I manage all the tax things. But I lost the debate over what accountant to use bc they are good at our particular income situation and have a great local reputation in terms of their actual accounting skills.

  3. I hate facial recognition with a deep passion. Seriously wtf IRS?!
