Good Things Friday (173) and Link Love

June 17, 2022

1. I submitted a whole sheaf of FSA claims all at once to create a nice future dopamine hit. (The original plan was to submit it and forget it but darn I keep going back to see if it’s been approved. Tell me to ignore it now please!)

2. JB’s summer care is run by a childcare facility under their normal programming so I think/hope it’ll also qualify for FSA redemption. We’ll find out! Especially since we thought that $5000 dependent daycare money would be easily used up by Smol by this time in the year, but we currently don’t know when Smol will be able to enroll.

Physically been a rough week after an emotionally rough…. Feels like forever?

Just a little link love

This is really confusing. Why would they have been on the hook for this? Why can they be held responsible for something like this when gun manufacturers cannot be held responsible for mass shootings? Why is this world so confusing? Geico must pay $5.2 million to woman who got HPV from sex in man’s insured car, court rules

(Then Courtney Milan read the related case and breaks it down here.)

Every time I see another SCOTUS decision, I just cannot brace myself sufficiently for what new harm they’re pulling.
More precedent shredding: The Supreme Court basically overruled itself in decision shielding Border Patrol officers

Largest oil and gas producers made close to $100bn in first quarter of 2022

I’ve done this with dogs, a seagull and a mouse but a possum is a whole other thing: When a possum walked into a Brooklyn bar, Sara Fulton said, ‘I’m from Alaska. I got this.’

Wow I hate everything about this design: Here’s what it might be like to travel on a double decker airplane seat. While I’m a small person and probably could squeeze in that lower level, it would give me screaming fits of claustrophobia before I even got properly seated. The upper level is hideously inaccessible. It’s like this designer hasn’t met or imagined that the elderly, disabled, or anyone outside a very limited range of sizes and shapes would want to fly. I hope that this design goes all the way away.

Why China Threads the Needle on Ukraine. I do wonder if the US is headed into that modelled late stage capitalist decline, because it sure feels like everything is going to hell in a handbasket.

Re: the HPV thing: I would be really surprised if this holds up in federal court. Would the boyfriend’s homeowner’s or renter’s insurance be on the hook if they’d been in his home? Or hers, in her own? Would she be able to sue a hotel? It looks like a bad ruling based on legal technicalities, not anything legit.

Re: the double-decker airplane seat: ugh. It’s dumb. And looks like a death trap, in addition to being uncomfortable. And is a jerk’s philosophy in action, because he outright says: “So if passengers still fly in the worst economy class seats, why are we going to give them a better option? It makes money. That’s the goal of the airline at the end of the day, not to make your flight better.” With that as an example of how he thinks, his parents should not be proud of him as a human being.

I can’t pretend to understand it because even with Courtney Milan’s explanation it doesn’t make sense to me!

You’re so right. I misread his quote earlier but now that you call it out: Definitely a jerk

I think you are mistaken and the double decker airline thing needs to go all the way straight to hell. 😉
