Good Things Friday (243) and Link Love

1. No idea if I’m doing this right but I twisted off the sprouts from the sweet potato and put them in water to root them. The potato goes back into the plastic bag to encourage it to grow more sprouts. If these sprout roots, the kids and I will plant them on a weekend. Update: they are sprouting rootlets! This is exciting!
2. I had no idea that growing something that’s essentially a weed requires this much reading and maintenance. I may have chosen poorly, as a low effort preference gardener. We’ll see.
Challenges this week: The days, they were so very long.
Americans’ Challenges with Health Care Costs: “KFF polling has found that the high cost of health care is a burden on U.S. families”
Alex Jones must pay $1.1 billion of Sandy Hook damages despite bankruptcy – court An excerpt to spare you seeing his vile face: Lopez ruled that more than $1.1 billion of those verdicts, awarded for defamation and intentional infliction of emotional distress, cannot be wiped away in bankruptcy. But he ruled that other parts of the verdicts, including $324 million in attorneys’ fees that were awarded as punitive damages in the Connecticut case, could possibly be discharged.
May he reap the pain and hatred that he sowed, tenfold.
California to introduce traffic speed cameras that fine motorists. I am skeptical that this will be an effective deterrent. At least not to the rich jerks who drive in SF and LA. A $50 fine that probably won’t be enforced if they ignore it? I’ve seen these guys speed and the cars they drive. The likelihood that $50 matters to them is low. Meanwhile low income drivers get to choose community service as an alternative? Because you have so much free time as a low income earner? I don’t have any better answers, I’m just skeptical. I do think, and maybe it is planned but they don’t say, this would be good on the freeways and highways where you get jerks like this killing people.
10 billion snow crabs have disappeared off the Alaskan coast.
