Just a little (link) love: families! Edition

YOUR DEBT IS NOT SLAVERY, SO STOP SAYING IT IS. This should go without saying but it really doesn’t.
I don’t usually eat cookie dough but this log is calling my name. Salted Butter Chocolate Chunk Shortbread, come be mine!
Are you a boring investor? Liz at Chief Mom Officer is and she’s not wrong.
How to write a condolence note. I wish I’d read this a long time ago.
And linked to Nina Kalanithi, can I just saw how weird it feels whenever I see unexpected dotted lines like when a blogger I read for a long time turns out to be related to someone I’ve known for a long time. I read an excerpt of A Breath of Air a long while ago and always intended to finish reading it. I’ve read Jo of A Cup of Jo for years, on and off, and had completely missed that Nina was Jo’s sister.
I love Tawcan’s Dividend City. I had the “buy what you love” philosophy in mind but definitely didn’t think it through this way! I think this analogy makes so much sense. Now we just have to build an ethical Dividend City. Unless I chuck it all for ETFs.
The Skype sex scam – I had no idea this was a thing but it’s disgusting and worrisome. We live so much of our lives online, and I feel the tremendous weight of the responsibility of teaching JB to protect zirself from falling for any of hundreds, or thousands, of scams online. Related scams discussion.

+1000 to that first post.
If you can find a good ethical ETF, let me know. Most of the ones I’ve seen have been wanting because of high fees, limited diversification, or low returns.
I’ll let you know what I find!
I just read an article about Lucy and John last week–I didn’t know she and Jo are sisters, either.
Weird intersections!
Hmmm… I think that for many people, their debt IS their slavery – though perhaps “slavery” is too strong a term (then again, maybe not). Cool about the dotted lines:) Someone I’ve followed on Twitter for years recently realized that she’s friends with my daughter. (I had no idea she was so young!) I love that video. We have so much to learn from animals!
If they’re not being prostituted against their will because of their debt, if they get to choose what work to do, if they have the option of bankruptcy, if nobody is stealing their families away from them… it’s not anything like actual slavery. They still have a locus of control.
If they’re in a situation in which they were brought to the US to work by lies and are being charged more for their “room and board” than they’re making in “wages” by the people “employing” them, or if they or their children are being held hostage, then that’s actual slavery. Not “debt”.
I can understand feeling oppressed by the debt enough to use the “slavery” term as hyperbole but debt is nothing like it.
The institution of debt as it exists today can’t dehumanize people and their families systematically for generations, can’t beat them to force them to work from morning til night, rape them, father children on them who are then sold into slavery, tear them away from their home and family on a whim, casually murder them, and otherwise strip them of all basic rights as a human. In the days of debtors’ prison it may have been akin to slavery but not now.
Now, debt really sucks, but it’s something that can be changed or fought against without risking one’s life. Heck, we even have the option of declaring bankruptcy.
Oh my god that video made my heart melt!!!
Cats and dogs can get along together!
Mamas supporting mamas!! 🙂
Have a great weekend!
