Good Things Friday (177) and Link Love

1. It cost an arm and a leg but I’m so very glad that we did get the backyard renovated when we did. We didn’t do anything fancy, we just made it less of a jungle and more of a safe outdoor place for all the dogs and kids to hang out. They make their own fun: finding the sunbeams, finding ways to make a mess, raking the potato plants unnecessarily.
Tracking the California drought. The perpetual drought is one of the reasons I’m skeptical we’ll be able to stay in California as long as we might like. That and the rising water levels in the whole SF Bay area. My friend who does work on that type of thing said the projections for the next 50 years with regard to the water levels are horrifying.
With the U.S. dollar nearly equal to the euro for the first time in 20 years, the impact is already being felt by Americans. Sharing this one largely to squint and say: I don’t quite follow. Or rather, hm. I always thought people wanted the dollar to be “strong” in exchange rates but I never considered the many negative implications of it actually being that strong.
Vigilante climate activist group deflates Bay Area SUV tires overnight: Despite the Tyre Extinguishers claiming to target SUVs in urban areas — “You will have no difficulty getting around without your gas guzzler, with walking, cycling or public transit,” the leaflet says — the group’s first Bay Area deflations took place in a largely unwalkable suburban neighborhood. Well, that was rather stupid. I understand the point they’re trying to make but they couldn’t have made it in an actually urban area? So much of California is hard to get around, if not impossible, without a car. And even if public transit was readily available, it still wouldn’t be feasible for those of us who don’t have the ability or energy to spare to lug our groceries or library books to and from home.

My partner was cooking a potato, opened the oven and said “how are you doing potato?” to which Bagel the orange kitten replied with a meow, prompting a serious discussion about the fact that he is a cat, not a potato. I will show him some Jorts tweets as a visual aid.
