Good Things Friday (225) and Link Love

June 16, 2023

1. Smol Acrobat was exposed to a child with COVID last week and we’ve been testing and watching them for any signs of symptoms or infection. Still 🤞🤞

2. We made it. This has been a Very Full Week.

Just a little link love

Oh those poor kids. So glad they survived, even while my heart breaks for their loss and ordeal: Missing children found after 40 days in Amazon survived like ‘children of the jungle,’ Colombian president says

The Heavy Cost of Banning Books About Black Children By Anna Gifty Opoku-Agyeman. (Opoku-Agyeman is a doctoral candidate at Harvard Kennedy School studying public policy and economics. She is the editor of The Black Agenda: Bold Solutions for a Broken System, which features Black scholars and experts across economics, education, health, climate, criminal justice, and technology)

This is heartbreaking in so many ways: Track Star Tori Bowie Died in Childbirth. That she was alone for this scary ordeal, that she and her daughter didn’t make it, that no one even looked for her for several days. I’m reclusive but if I didn’t have PiC and the kids, I’d hope that people would care enough to notice I had been silent for too long.

UnitedHealthcare pulling more bullshit. This would have been a huge financial blow for my family who need annual colonoscopies, thank goodness they’re not with UHC anymore, but this is awful for their current / remaining patients : ‘Stunning’ change to United’s colonoscopy coverage roils physicians and patients. “UnitedHealthcare plans to barricade many colonoscopies behind a controversial and complicated process known as prior authorization…

Physicians say that requiring prior authorization will make it more difficult for patients to get endoscopic procedures, particularly cancer diagnostic and surveillance procedures, in a timely fashion. These make up roughly half of the procedures that gastroenterologists perform.

UnitedHealthcare has said that prior authorizations in general should be completed within two days, but clinicians interviewed by STAT said that’s rarely the case.”

A chuckle

What I find most horrifying about Tori Bowie’s death is that I read that she was 5’9″, yet was also 96 pounds at death.

It’s buried in the body of NPR’s report: https://www.npr.org/2023/06/13/1181971448/tori-bowie-an-elite-olympic-athlete-died-of-complications-from-childbirth

Being 8 months pregnant and at such a low weight– it makes me think of some of the other articles I’ve read about run coaches who pushed for extremely low body weights and penalized runners for “not looking like a runner.” I doubt that this will be a wake-up call for that kind of coach, but it should be.

Oh I missed that detail and that hurts my heart for her even more. That’s just far too small, that’s less than I weigh at 5′ and I’m well past pregnancy.

“The debate is over the method.” 🤣🤣🤣

    Fingers crossed Smol escapes unscathed!
