My dirty little (sock) secret
May 29, 2008
Chicky Finance’s explanation of why she only buys white socks, despite her love of wildly colored socks, tickled me. It reminded me of my breakthrough discovery that almost all women’s socks are too big for my feet, and no matter how much I pulled them up, I was guaranteed to be running around linoleum floors with two inches of sock flopping off my toes within minutes. This was especially tragic when out visiting because I’m a trained Asian, and don’t wear shoes in anyone’s homes, whether or not they’re Asian.
I finally figured out what to do: boys’ socks! I wear about a size 3 or 4 in boys’ shoes, so the day came when I put two and two together, and came up triumphant at Target with a pack of boys’ socks. It took months before I was outed. My buddy and I had our feet up on the coffee table side by side, and his girlfriend pointed out that we were both wearing the exact same sock, with the same gray toebox and red stitched “Hanes” brand under the balls of our feet. Whoops! Hey, kids’ socks are cheaper, too!
Hahaha! I do the same thing. I’m petite so not only socks but sometimes even regulkar clothing I buy from “youth” section :)For example, my ski outfit costed me %50 cheaper just because I bought from youth section of store š
I buy my socks in the little girls’ section. I once bought a pair of those zip off pants (coverts to shorts) in the boys department vs a pair of Columbia women’s pants for $32 and too long.
I also buy work style boots and hiking boots in the boys dept because I rarely find those types of shoes in 5.5.
~chicky~ š I know I’m a size 14 pants in girls, but sometimes tops are just awkwardly proportioned.
Still, you can’t beat the reduced prices for essentially the same clothing.
~karen~ I bet the little girls’ socks are cuter than the boys’. Now, I’ve not had as much luck with the actual shoes, other than boys’ sandals, but I might be trying them for sneakers next. Running shoes are just way too expensive these days.
what size regular shoes are you in women’s?
that is such a brill idea
I’m linking this.. š
~FB~ I’m usually a size 5.5, sometimes a 6 in some brands. That means I’m at the small end of the spectrum for those women’s socks that go from size 6-9. BIG difference!!
I thought I was the only one buying my clothes in the kids section so it was refreshing to read this.
I always get my socks in the children’s section and sometimes skirts too. š
~lulugal11~ I’ve been tempted by the skirts, but the prices weren’t quiiite as good as I wanted. We all seem to be in good company here. š
