Fiona (Burn Notice) versus the Maxi Dress
August 22, 2009
I’ve said it before, I’m against the maxi dress. But according to, uh, FINAL SALE [stamped on the receipt, thanks BCBG!], I’m stuck with this one. Nevertheless, I need to know which of the two above choices should be worn on a night out in Miami – clubbing optional – and if the maxi dress could be appropriate for the actual mid-afternoon wedding.
The orangey dress is very much like something Fiona would wear … so it feels like it’s right for Miami, but it was a bit pricey. And it has pockets!
Ehhh … I dunno. But what do I know? I’m no fashion maven and y’all already know that. Help?
I think the first dress would be great for Miami…during the day. I usually would go with something more, ahem…revealing for clubbing nights in south beach…but take that with a grain; the last time i was there was for spring break in college ten years ago! Maybe if you dress it up with some flashy accessories and heels and makeup it would be good for a night out?
I’d wear that second dress to an afternoon wedding for sure!
they are both very cute!
Flashier is generally the trend in Miami, so I’ll second the vote on the orange dress for that.
The other one for a wedding seems fine, barring an ultra-fancy wedding or some unusual theme.
One final caveat: take my fashion sense with a bag of salt (a grain doesn’t seem large enough).
Loved the Burn Notice reference. Long live Sam Axe!
can you explain what a maxi dress is? ie, how is it different from a regular dress?
I like the first one because it’s short and colorful. Both look awesome on you though!
Ohhhhh I love both of them!!! You look great!! Red for the night out in Miami….long one for day-outings.
The orange dress is beachy (LOVE the pockets!) and would probably be fine if you added some accessories. The maxi would be more Miami clubbing if you hacked it off above the knees. I think the maxi would be rather hot.
I’ve been to a restaurant/lounge on a Wed and have seen anything from jeans to a formal dress.
@Sense a maxi dress is just a long dress.

hmmm… I think I must be the dissenter…
I really dislike that orange dress, it’s not flattering at all to you. It’s shapeless and a bad colour for your skin tone, and it makes your bum look rumply, not cute. It doesn’t do anything for your boobage either, and the photo makes it look like you have a little belly, though I’m pretty sure you don’t!
Sorry, you probably didn’t want to hear that, but I would never let one of my friends out in that! I think your body deserves much better! š
I prefer the maxi dress on you (assuming you’ll be wearing heels so it’s not pooling at your feet–right?). The colour and pattern are very nice on you. I think that accessorized properly you could pull it off for a summery wedding š
You have a lovely figure and I don’t think the orange dress does it justice. Definitely prefer the maxi, whatever the heck a maxi is.
I vote for the orange one with cute strappy heels and some colorful jewelry (turquoise, gold, or something like that). But do belt it so it flatters your shape, because right now it’s kind of hanging on your body.
The second dress is cute as well, and would look nice with flats for the mid-afternoon wedding. It’s a bit too long for a night out in Miami.
Re: LA Daze’s turquoise accessories…you might look like a Dol-fan…you decide if that’s good or bad š

I’m with Ginger & Frugal Zeigeist on the orange thing.
The maxi is much more sophisticated-looking. Very attractive.
Sense: Regarding clubbing attire: I know what you’re saying, but that’s just not my style. I haven’t got the … er.. assets for it! This is as close as it gets! š
RC: I think we’re ok on the casual wedding front, and your caveat matches that of my shopping companion. š I’m almost CERTAIN that he had Fiona in mind when that dress was pulled off the rack.
myprettypennies and Carrie:
No help at all, you’re supposed to pick one for me to return! š
Karen: That’s exactly what the saleswoman suggested! I wish I had time for hackery, I’ve one day to do it and that’s not nearly enough time. Too bad I don’t have sufficient tailoring skills.
Ginger: I should have prefaced the entire post with this: I’m always open to criticism! š So thank you. I appreciate and prefer brutal honesty. And well spotted! I DO have a food belly in that photo. I don’t think I even tried to hide it.
Yes, I’ve got to find shoes that fit that length – I didn’t have any immediately handy for the “photo shoot” such as it was.
FZ: Thanks for the input! (I’m actually gunning for nay votes on that dress ’cause it’s more expensive.)
L.A. Daze: Perhaps that’d work if I had an accessorizer: I’m a bit crap at that skill.
FAM: Thanks for chiming in!!
Depending on how much you care about the dress…you could cut it and use Stitch Witch to hem it… You’re stuck with the dress anyways…save the money by returning the orange dress.
You could always mail me the dress and I can take it to get altered for you LOL
