Portland: what is there to do?
August 4, 2008
I’m heading out to Portland for a long weekend starting on Friday. My cousin and I are making this a girls’ weekend (aka: no family visits) but since I’m normally only up there to visit family, I have no idea what else Portland has to offer.
We’re going to go hiking, and I’d like to visit Powell’s City of Books since I’ve never been. I don’t want to buy anything, I just want to wander around the books and ogle them.
I’m not looking for touristy things, necessarily, just fun, frugal things to do or see. Does anyone have suggestions?
Please see these for me: http://www.japanesegarden.com/visiting/

PS I didn’t forget to email you.
There’s no sales tax in Oregon, so whenever I’m in Portland I check out Pioneer Place and the surrounding shopping areas.
Then again, I grew up in British Columbia, where the sales tax used to be 14.5%…so no tax = sizable discount on big-ticket items.
karen: I’ll put that on my list of things to do. We’ll see how much cousin wants to drive me around. š
bacon: You know what I was really hoping for? An H&M. *guiltily looking ’round* But our sales tax is up to 8.25% so no tax is good times!
Donut Shop! You have to indulge in fatty cream laden donuts from the VooDoo donut shop. And a day old bucket of donuts is only $5 .. its like 5lbs or more … That’s in the Pearl district. Also next door is this french bakery starts with a B … blue sign … name escapes me even though I loved their mushroom blue cheese gallette.
go to Mt. Tabor Park (beautiful waterfall) and the Hawthorne area is like SF’s Haight – eclectic, cute and interesting. hip chicks do wine is a fun place to sample wine with female friends.
if you can get out of portland and see the coast and wineries, those are amazing.
sfordinarygirl: Am I going to have a heart attack from the donuts? Because if I am … I’ll have to hike extra far on Saturday to make up for it.
We’re going to be in the Pearl District on Sunday, so that’s a distinct possibility.
