Little things

February 8, 2009

Mostly a small change weekend. On my part, anyway.

+ Received a $1.10 refund from the loan company. I guess I overpaid the payoff?
+ Treated myself to a 33 cent cup of Lime Chicken Maruchan ramen – So(dium) delicious!
+ Had some really good (and cheap) dim sum – Less than $14/person including tip.
+ Tank of gas, $18
+ Paid a $1 Fandango service fee for a free movie ticket at Regal. Exchanged for a free movie voucher because my parents smashed up their car right before the movie started and I had to leave and pick them up. They’re bruised and sore, but I think they’re alright. No other cars were involved, either, thankfully. Put them both to bed with Tylenol and dinner, and stayed home to watch 2 more episodes of Firefly and House. Free TV via Hulu is a blessing and a curse!
+ Finished two of three loads of laundry. Waiting 3+ weeks to really do laundry meant I could finally sort into lights and darks! Smaller loads than usual, but I’ve been worried about the agitator in the machine and its ability to handle the big loads lately.

Big bills, pending:
+ Trying to decide what to do about a rental car. Just a weekend rental for them since they can use my car during the week? Or a weekly rental with unlimited mileage?
+ $500 deductible, family car. Sadly, my auto maintenance fund is not quite there yet so I’ll have to steal from the expense fund again.
+ Rent

Back to hanging up laundry, and plotting which errands to run today. All week I’ve been fighting off the office creeping crud that everyone else harbored, and ran out of Day/Nyquil doing it. Without it, the cough and sore throat are developing. Must. Not. Succumb!

A few links to brighten a cold, gloomy day:

+ Please welcome FrugalCPA to the fray.
+ FrugalTrenches could use a little pick me up, not that she hasn’t had scores of well wishers, but any good thoughts you can send her way would be lovely!
+ It looks like Escape Brooklyn’s really going to sell her place and escape after all!
+ Almost Frugal’s looking on the brighter side of the recession.
+ J. Money’s got His and Her money combined and things look really good. See? I guess marriage IS good for the pocketbook.

Ha! For some reason I can’t get enough of puns like that.

Sad news about your parents (I hope they’re okay) and the deductible!

    I love House.

And thanks for the generous welcome!

    $1.10! haha…sawweeeet 🙂

  3. Karen says:

Sorry to hear about your parents’ accident and hope they’re ok.

I hope your parents are ok! What happened and this is cause for future driving concern? I can’t imagine what they would do without you.

I found that Zicam products really help when it comes to nipping a cold/flu in the bud. Drink lots of tea and take your vitamins and try not to stress out.

  5. Oh I do hope your parents are ok! And that you don’t get that cough/cold. Rest up.

Thank you for the lovely kind get well wishes and link. I am today, feeling a lot better.

Are your parents OK, how bad is the car? It seems you guys can’t catch a break right now (mom’s bad luck omen). I hope everything gets fixed up quickly. I didn’t have rental coverage and my car was in the shop for 7 weeks, it was a big expense. Other driver was uninsured so it came out of my pocket.

frugalCPA: You’re welcome! Both for the pun and the other thing. 🙂 I’m glad that there are two people who were amused by that.

    J. Money: We’re living high on the hog, now! I love that Mrs. Micah just got a check like that, too.

    Karen: Thanks, I think they
just needed some time to recuperate.

losangelesdaze: It was a freak thing with the rain and a driver cutting them off and braking suddenly; they braked quickly too and just hit the center divider. I surely hope that’s all that happened because if neither of them can drive anymore, we’d have real problems. Mom’s already been taken off driving duty.

More hot tea, here I come!

notesfromthefrugaltrenches: So glad you’re feeling better, keep mending!

Miss M: Car’s pretty bad, but I don’t think it’s totaled. *fingers crossed for some of that elusive good luck* I think we’ll make do with a rental for the weekends if anything, and pray that it takes less than a month to fix. I don’t think we’re getting any money from that center divider or the idiot driver who cut them off in the rain. *grumble grumble*

At least, if nothing else, no one was seriously injured that I know of and it didn’t involve other cars. Small blessings, but I appreciate them anyway.
