Credit Card Fraud

July 2, 2009

is just not peachy. Even though both credit cards on this account have been in my possession, someone managed to get the number on June 24th, attempted a $1 charge on it 50 miles away, and then went to (gas station) town on it the next day in the amounts of $85 and $75.

This is the reason I use credit cards instead of debit. I’m not responsible for those charges, or I shouldn’t be, anyway, and Chase has already closed that account and issued new cards. But I’m still ticked. I’ll be without my primary use card for five business days, smack dab in the middle of my trip which is inconvenient but how the heck did someone get the whole card number? That’s downright unsettling.

In any case, things seem to be well in hand for now. In ten business days, a set of Fraud Verification paperwork will need to be filled out and that should be the end of that. I hope.

Ugh, I had the same thing happen to me in April.

I definitely agree with you the CC’s are the way to go in terms of protection. It was a headache to get everything sorted out when it happened to me, but I’m glad it wasn’t my bank account that was cleaned out!

    The horror!

I don’t think you’d be liable on your debit card, either. With my credit union I’m not. I had 2 charges that wiped out my account on a Fri. I got one charged reversed that day and one on Mon. I really love my CU; they’ve always been so nice and easy to deal with. I can always talk to a person!

wow, well, I’m glad you caught it quickly!

I wonder sometimes how much access cashiers or employees of online companies have to that kind of thing, and if they are selling that info somewhere?

credit cards in NZ are hard to get, and expensive with their annual fees. my bank just turned my debit card into a combo debit/VISA credit card (they just implemented that system here) and it makes me REALLY nervous, because my entire bank account would get wiped out if someone had access to my number. i haven’t used my card for cc purchases yet…too scared to try it out, and most places don’t even accept credit cards.

  4. My debit card offers all the protection of a credit card, including fraud protection. I know at least for my bank it does. It does suck that if someone gets your number they can get your cash, but you can get it back.

Ginger: I know, they refunded the charges to my account really quickly, but I would have been hit with NSF charges if they had been charged to my debit/withdrawn from my bank acct.

Karen: I shouldn’t be liable, but for some reason, it always seems to take way too long to refund those charges. Friend had to wait 7-10 biz days. I waited 1.

Sense: I wonder that same thing! I remember how we used to have CC tapes that listed the whole #! so not safe.

BB: True, I’m just not patient.
