What I read

Those Who Save Us, by Jenna Blum
(Borrowed from the Prime Reading membership program.) This was well written but also profoundly disturbing. The lives during the Third Reich, the impunity with which Nazis tortured, maimed, and executed living beings, men, women, children, animals based on some belief of their superiority… it’s positively chilling to realize that there are still people today who endorse those appalling beliefs.

Artemis Fowl, by Eoin Colfer
(Borrowed from the Prime Reading membership program.) I’ve read part of this series before but it’s been over a decade and it was a bit of fun light reading.

Hellcat Vol 1, Kate Leth.
(Borrowed from the Prime Reading membership program.) Kate Leth is a fantastic writer but this is the first chance I’ve had to read her. Definitely recommend!

Any Witch Way You Can, Amanda M Lee.
(Borrowed from the Prime Reading membership program.) I objected to some minor inaccurate word use but this was light fun reading insofar as a story can be light when it involves a murder mystery. I enjoyed the mix of the supernatural, the everyday town, and the relatively simple mystery.

Coming Clean: A Memoir, Kimberly Rae Miller

(Borrowed from the Prime Reading membership program.) I didn’t expect anything from this book when I started it and I felt like I’d been turned inside out by the end.

My parents weren’t as bad as Kimberly’s but they did start a form of hoarding when I was in my late teens, and starting in my 20s through now, Dad’s failure to maintain the house was, and is, a source of profound shame and discomfort. When PiC and I stayed there, which was rare even early on in our dating days, we couldn’t use the shower in the working bathroom. The other bathroom was taken over by some kind of black mold. It was awful. Just horrible and unlivable and reading this book was a huge eye opener into how someone else handled the situation.

The Unkillable Kitty Kane, Colin Falconer
(free Kindle First book) Being that this was historical fiction, the main characters were a mish-mash of real people, and it was compelling writing but probably a bit more dark than I was in the mood for. I should have known not to pick a book that was about someone surviving two ships sinking and expect a happy story. But she survived! It should have been happy. Spoiler alert: it wasn’t, really. Well written, though.

Interpreter of Maladies, Jhumpa Lahiri.
(free Kindle First book) This debut collection won the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for fiction so it hardly needs any praise from me but it was really well written. As a general rule, I find short stories an unsatisfying genre but I had hardly a flicker of discontent on that score as I read these stories. I did still want more but it

Where we went

I went to Dallas for FinCon and JuggerBaby STILL asks me occasionally, Mama, you go to Dattas? I’m not sure if ze is worried I’m leaving again or is just confirming that I went.

We managed to get to Monterey for a short Aquarium visit. JuggerBaby is still talking about the jellyfish exhibit and the sea otters.

We’ve been spending a lot of time at a local park – JB is in love with the play structure that’s meant for kids ages 5 and up so it takes a lot of our attention but I love that ze is enthusiastic about climbing and balancing and all that. Ze wants to go there most days. Seamus loves it because he’s allowed to wander the brush and bracken off leash when it’s empty. He’s only allowed to do this because he has great recall, no matter how far he’s wandered and nothing could stop him from coming back if he hears JB crying.
