Good Things Friday (175) and Link Love
July 1, 2022
1. Whenever I see an author I like on Twitter, I make sure to ask the library to add their books to our collection. Support authors!
2. Walgreens didn’t credit my $5 promo Walgreens cash after a purchase last week. Happily it only took two attempts on chat to get it credited. It’s gotta be the little things these days.
Challenges this week: everything, y’all.
At Ask A Manager: being direct as a Black woman, coworkers identify people by race, and other questions with Michelle Silverthorn
Tech Companies Won’t Say If They’ll Give Cops Abortion Data: Motherboard asked some of the biggest tech companies on the planet if they’ll provide law enforcement with user data related to abortions. None of them answered the question. (Hint: that IS the answer. If they won’t say they won’t, they will)
San Francisco police say an officer was arrested on suspicion of theft, fraud and forgery. I’m sad to say the only surprise here for me was that he was arrested at all. I’ll be further surprised if there are any real and lasting consequences for his actions. More examples of this at Greg Doucette’s thread on how common it is for cops to lie
California tax relief: What’s in the deal. It looks like they’re going to help people hit hardest by all this price gouging, which is finally a bit of good news.
Unsettled: The Afghan refugee crisis collides with the American housing disaster. There are so many places that need help but from this article I found a local refugee assistance program to donate to: Afghan Coalition. I was previously donating to HIAS but the local branch currently has someone on their board I know personally who is so absolutely odious and toxic, I never wanted to see his name or face again. I can’t have anything to do with them and needed to support Afghan refugees another way.
This is pretty funny: Mystery as Canadian radio station plays Rage Against the Machine song nonstop
If you care about protecting & expanding access to abortion, I’ve got a few suggestions for @runforsomething candidates you can help right now… (Reminder: 100% of our folks are pro-choice – and we’ve got ppl running in nearly every state… )

I do think that people are really underestimating the risk in a post-Roe world that ad tech poses to women. It isn’t just Law Enforcement has an easier time accessing your phone than your home and it isn’t just data brokers. States now have private-citizen bounties, remember?
