Just a little link love + small wins Small win: I found a new next size up bathing suit for JB for next to nothing!

What were your small wins this week?

If the separation of parents and children also breaks your heart, and you can donate to one of these causes linked in his tweet to help the kids, show Dr. Linus your receipt – he’ll match up to $10k, however long it takes. UPDATE June 21 10:53 am PST, he’s down to the last $150. Good job, y’all!

The answer is no: “Medical professionals, members of Congress and religious leaders are calling on the Trump administration to stop separating migrant families. They question whether these shelter facilities are appropriate for younger children.

At least one very popular PF blogger is an asshat who think that it’s ok that migrant children are being separated from their families because they still have food and shelter because it’s far more concerning that children in Syria are living in dire circumstances. A) Read up on the lifelong consequences of familial separations, well known since after Operation Pied Piper in WWII. B) Both things are terrible and we should donate to help both horrible situations. C) Our government is materially contributing to the crappy situation in Syria just like it’s materially contributing to the separation and internment of babies and children. This all needs to stop. D) I don’t know about that blogger but I do have the capacity to care about more than one group of people and they don’t even have to look like or be like me to deserve it.

Hiro turned 30!

This is one of my nightmares: losing one of us when our child is young. We do have our life insurance and our wills, our trust, and I’m still working on pulling all the pertinent information into one handy Life and Death folder.

  1. I’m willing to bet there’s a strong correlation between people donating to assist Syrian refugees and those donating to stop family separations at the border. The whataboutism of some people is astonishing. Did he think he was being helpful with that comment? Sigh.

    • Revanche says:

I would agree. We donated to both. He wasn’t trying to be helpful, he doesn’t mind acting like a jerk to women. You’d notice him acting a whole different way with other men, particularly other doctors.

  2. White coat investor is also the blogger who refuses to be in a room or elevator alone with a woman because he shares the same beliefs about women as Mike Pence, right? (How can you even be a doctor if you look at all women as prey that you can only prevent yourself from molesting if someone else is there?)

Great set of links this week. Thank you.

    • Revanche says:

Correct – he won’t be alone with or mentor women. He either views women as prey he can only not molest with witnesses and/or as all bad actors who are just waiting for our chance to make a false accusation. He repeatedly pointed out he has to protect himself and his family from all women that way.

I often wonder why he’s so popular with people who seem decent.

    • Wait, for real? Whaaaaat.

(Also one of the saddest moments at my last job was when one of my senior colleagues who is very thoughtful and I generally respect was like, “I don’t feel that way [like Pence] and I understand how this can hurt women, but I think it’s the right approach for some men.” And I was like nooo you too? Ughhh.)

  3. Xin says:

Good gosh, that White Coat Investor guy is a jerkface. Ugh, that’s something I have trouble getting used to now that I’ve started looking at Twitter, people who think they’ve got pithy “hot takes” but are actually mean and also stupid. And to hear that he also shares Pence’s views on interactions with women? Ugh.

This is a tangent, but it makes me so mad that people who openly espouse sexist or racist views are not shunned. (That’s an unrealistic and immature expectation, but a gal can dream.) In NYC biglaw of all places, in one of the more diverse firms in the city in terms of representation of women and minority partners no less, I’ve had white male colleagues dare tell me, a woman of color, that (a) they didn’t understand why we had women’s events and that they felt discriminated against and (b) that they were horrified and disgusted by a 50th Anniversary of Brown v. Board panel discussion where some well-respected figures from the legal community, including the late Judge Abdus-Salaam, spoke about why affirmative action was important. The kicker is that these particular dudes were actually significantly less well-credentialed than their women and women of color firm classmates (I don’t believe in that kind of school rank and grades-based elitism, but the profession typically does and the difference here was dramatic). Nonetheless, they consistently got better opportunities at the firm than said women and women of color since the first weeks of our summer internships before anyone had a chance to prove themselves because biglaw is still a terrible place for women and minorities and I think my firm’s diversity initiatives are ultimately still window dressing. (I’ve been stewing about this topic for a while now that I’ve been in some much better workplaces since then.)

I’ve come to embrace the fact that people show their true colors on Twitter in a lot of ways and so I don’t lend my support by clicks or linking to people who are terrible.

If society continues to embrace awful people or refuses to make it very clear they need to change, at least I can weed them out for myself.

I hear your frustration and anger – I share it. It’s ugly and awful that people still get away with considering the white cishet male as the default view that truly matters, and as the standard. The rest of us exist and are pretty damn excellent.

  4. Reading these comments and your post, I find it’s so clear that there is a better way. Re. Syrian refugees, Canada has welcomed thousands of them. I work with dozens of Syrian teens at my school. They’re needy, as teens who haven’t had any schooling for years are, but they’re coming along, forming connections with students and staff from diverse backgrounds, and they’re grateful and respectful. Re. women, I’m shocked at the White Coat guy. New Zealand’s female prime minister just had a baby. That’s the way of the future! Keep thinking rationally. There are others – and other nations – that join you in doing so.
