CAREER + MONEY THINGS
Ellen Pao spent 8 months as interim CEO of Reddit. Unsurprisingly the experience is full of trolls. When will we realize that freedom of speech isn’t freedom to attack, demean, and threaten people who disagree with you, and quit acting like we have to tolerate disgusting behavior?
Reminder: The simplest things in life remain awesome.
It’s incredibly sad thatcrime among the elderlydwarfs that of youth now, in Japan.
Parents camping out for kindergarten. This is absurd.
Matt Fraction on creation and collaboration.
Nearly all the billionaires he’s known have been completely dedicated to their careers, he adds. “They don’t or didn’t really care about you or anyone else, wives, children, or friends as much as they cared about the hunt.” – Don’t expect work-life balance if you want to be rich
FUN THINGS
Normally I wouldn’t characterize a hacking as fun but I’ll make a little exception for the hack of the Ashley Madison site given the company’s reason for existing and boast of being unhackable.
The very secret diary of Aragorn
This family vacation sounds like organizational mastery. I don’t like my family enough to spend a week with them but it sure sounds like fun for the right people 😉
INTERESTING THINGS
Abby’s description of Tim’s feeling brainless is spot on for my brain fog that’s developed over the years due to untreated pain.
I noticed the dropoff in attendance this year too. A pondering about the future of SDCC.
I’ll never understand why news outlets always report date rape or any other kind of sexual assault posed as a question whether or not it really occurred. They’re certainly quick to report other crimes as absolutes even in the absence of proof. Loretta Young isn’t unusual among the however many women who are assaulted and do not come forward because our society punishes the targeted and not the transgressor – how does someone sit around and come up with the theory that they want the kind of attention they’re going to get? Nine times out of ten, the person who comes forward is treated far far worse than the rapist or molester.
Drop off in attendance at SDCC? But most of us still can’t get tickets. I’m confused?
Yes, it was still a struggle to get tickets so I’m not sure what’s happening precisely but the crowds on site aren’t what they used to be. Might be that what we’re seeing is a drop off in the attendees that actually go out on the con floor and the ones that are going are heading for media only.
Oh, that’s probably true. That would be me, most likely – I’d hit the floor once, but the reason I’d be going is for the panels.
