Just a little (link) love: Dominoes edition

LinkLoveCAREER + MONEY THINGS

Travel hacking and making a trip to DisneyWorld almost free – I do this regularly for our annual travel. Immensely satisfying.

Filed under career sins but I can’t find it in my heart to judge this person for dumping the documents and setting them on fire.

I’ve never seen a PAC I could get behind and even financially support if they’re legitimately doing this more than Can You Not: two white men founded it and it’s “dedicated to dissuading overconfident, underqualified straight white guys from clogging up the Democratic primaries and crowding out the women and people of color who’d be better for the job…The founders registered Can You Not in Colorado last month and have started accepting donations, which will go to nonwhite, nonmale, and nonstraight candidates chosen by an advisory board of other nonwhite, nonmale, and nonstraight people.”

Given my experience with terrible bosses and toxic managers, I’m all about Tonya’s Financial Flexibility.

I don’t love this news about LendingClub’s issues, I was preparing to make some new investments but they won’t be with LendingClub.

#StarringJohnCho And #StarringConstanceWu Challenges The Invisibility Of Asian Actors In Hollywood PiC asked JuggerLB if ze would like a future in the performing arts and I had a kneejerk allergic reaction to the idea of my kid struggling in a thankless, low pay, poor future playing the at-BEST side side characters to white starring roles. Then I remembered that it’s hir choice, I can only train hir to be wise with whatever money ze makes, and really, if we want more representation, we have to change the system that whitewashes us out of everything AND we have to be there to represent.

FUN THINGS

Ladies, next time a man tells you to smile, you should offer him a selection to choose from. I know I will.

INTERESTING THINGS

Respectability politics is just a cover for racism. @iron_spike: “You can’t get more “respectable” than a Harvard lawyer, happily married, fit, well-spoken, and fashionable. For BW, nothing is good enough.”

Putting kids to bed earlier is good in many ways? Maybe. We accidentally put JuggerLB to bed at 5 pm one day because ze was clearly exhausted – for a nap! – but ze slept all the way through til 6:30 the next morning. This isn’t consistent, though. Other nights we’ve put hir to bed early and ze was up earlier. It’s worth playing with, though.

Confession: I never knew Jackie O had a sister, Princess Lee Radziwell, or that their lives were so very complicated. It always seemed like the Kennedy family had a blight on them but I didn’t realize it seems to go up the line through the Bouviers.

MESMERIZING

I couldn’t be trusted in the same room as one of these. I’d be that jerk who tripped and knocked stuff over in the last 98% of the project completion.

  1. Have you done a post about travel hacking before? I haven’t really heard of it, but it intrigues me for future use!

  2. Thanks so much for the link love! I go back and forth with travel hacking. On one hand I love it, but on the other sometimes it feels like a lot to manage and organize.

    • Revanche says:

I enjoy it but it IS a lot to manage. I used to do it more regularly to build up a cache of miles and points but I limit it to just for planned trips these days. I miss having the cushion of miles/points but we do ok.

  3. Thank you for the include! Brad actually circled back with questions about your travels… I think he’s made similar trips!
I have to say, I’m all about Can You Not’s mission, but it doesn’t stop me from liking Sanders. (Not that I wouldn’t vote for Clinton in the national election.) And it always shocks me that there’s seemingly so little conversation around the underrepresentation of Asians in media. Full disclosure: I’m white, so I may miss out on some of it. Which just goes to reinforce the point.

Oh thanks, I missed his questions. I hop over to answer him soon.

I can’t like Sanders because he completely ignores the disabled population, and if I’m not officially among their ranks now, I have no doubts that I will be in the future. Disabled people make up a significant part of the population but apparently his version of addressing it is “yoga is better than opioids” which is SUCH a shallow and uneducated and uninformed response to the wide and varied needs of a major segment of the citizenry.

There’s no major public conversation about it in part because, generally, the media and Hollywood prefer to focus on white people and so they don’t think it’s a problem that everything is pretty much white.

      • Hm I guess I haven’t explored his policies from that POV. I’ll have to do some more research. Looking like it’ll be irrelevant anyways come November.
And I totally get the why, but it must just be the circles of people I’m exposed to on a regular basis day to day. I hear a lot about the underrepresentation of black people and the injustice of having “abled” people play those that are “disabled,” but Asian underrepresentation isn’t usually a part of that conversation. I know it’s a problem… Proportionately maybe even more so, and think it should be a much bigger part of that conversation, that they’re all more than valid points, and that white washed media is not only boring but oppressive.

  4. While I’m not a big fan of Fresh Off the Boat (which gives me complicated feels), Constance Wu is a treasure!!! I’d love to see her in all the movies. I’m pretty sure the underrepresentation of Asian folks in American film is what drove me to start watching K-dramas, much like the lack of prominent Asian musicians had me turning to K-Pop and J-Pop. But as Hamilton showed us, you can have exciting, fun, and HUGELY PROFITABLE piece of media that includes–scratch that– embraces its diversity. Take note, Hollywood!
