Just a little (link) love: Christmas puppy edition

Who you sit near matters – bad or good

Mostly military but not all: Predictions for 2018

SP says the FIRE community doesn’t feel like my community and I mostly agree with her. I don’t feel like our family fits the FIRE mold, such as it is.

I knew it I knew it I knew it!: Ad targeters are pulling data from your browser’s password manager

I tried to leave a comment on Four Pillar Freedom’s post about meaningful lives but it rejected me so here are my thoughts: I loved that documentary as well, though as a small person with a big appetite, I slightly took exception to the idea I’d be served a smaller portion since I can eat as fast as my bigger dining companions. I hope that if we ever had the pleasure of dining at Jiro’s, he’d notice and adjust accordingly. 😉

As a longtime money blogger, I’ve noticed the trend of romanticizing the digital nomad life. I think it works wonderfully for Michelle from Sense of Cents who works from an RV, who has also had resounding success with her money blog, but the most important component of building a successful life is to know yourself. I love the digital part of her life, and have made that happen in my life, but I’m not built to be a nomad so I’ve instead built a home base that I love working from and living in. I enjoy short stints on the road but not much more than that!

What a Christmas surprise!

Thanks for the love, Revanche. And I agree with you about the appeal of being a digital nomad. Not for me. Mrs. Groovy and I hope to start RV-ing in 2019 for three months out of the year. But for nine months out of the year, we’ll need a base camp (i.e., a home). Hope 2018 treats you well. Cheers.

    Thanks for the link love!

Online advertisers are getting SCARY. It could be a coincidence, but we went into a lighting store over the weekend then had an instagram add for that store the next day. :/

      You’re welcome!

Ditto on the scary! I think I just texted a friend about something I wanted either for me or her and she said she was being served ads on it the next day. That’s seriously disturbing.

  3. That article about work neighbors is great–I just wish it included what I, as an employee, could do to minimize the effects of a toxic neighbor (I don’t have one right now, but it would be good to know). I wish the people planning our office move would understand this kind of workplace dynamic, but . . . they don’t.

And while I do use a password manager, I have never understood why I would want my browser to do that for me.

    • Revanche says:

Mitigating the effects of a toxic neighbor would be useful information! I’m going to guess anything you can do to block out their presence and toxicity would be a help. My fingers are crossed that you don’t end up with this situation after your office move.

Same, it never seemed like a good idea to let my browser with unknown level of security save my passwords.

  4. Thanks for the love! Sorry that my site rejected your comment – I am trying to switch to a different comment plugin.

Great list of articles here 🙂

  5. Thanks for the link love! Ooo, looks like I missed a couple awesome posts this last week or so that I’ll have to check out, too!

Drat, I don’t use my browser’s password manager but it DOES oh-so-helpfully populate forms. I’m going to have to read that article and see if there’s anything useful I can do, aside from donning a tin hat.

I have a friend who will be embarking on the digital nomad life in a few months. I recognize that it sounds neat, and would be a great adventure, and I am SO not interested in it for myself. He’s going to be open to having visitors, though, so I’m hoping I can go work from the van for a few days at some point (I already work from home so have the flexibility). I just .. like my stuff. And my place. And my people. And my city!

    • Revanche says:

Yes I absolutely love having adventurous friends I can join for a few days or a week, but not live the life myself.

Let me know if you find anything that helps with the auto-populate issue!

  7. Lily says:

AWWWWWW the puppy that got a puppy! How cute! I don’t think I’m cut for the nomad life either but good for those who are!

    • Revanche says:

Isn’t it so cute? I hope we can do something like that for Seamus 😀 But not a puppy. I can’t do puppy life anymore.

  8. How adorable is that puppy video, I hadn’t seen it before so thanks for that!

I also just read the post from Stacking Pennies and it sums up my feelings on the FIRE community so well.

I loved SP’s post so much, I’m enjoying this new wave of more self aware, reflective, critical blogging about this niche.

That annoyed the shit out of me in Jiro. I eat MORE than most people larger than me (damn metabolism)

I was thinking back on the travel I’ve done and the places still on my list, and then the overnight trip we did this Christmas break and how eager we were to come home to our fur balls. Much as I love travel I increasingly dislike the flying part (a requirement when you live on an island nation) and right now am in a nesting phase of life.

    • Revanche says:

Yeah there’s a lot of personality in that particular niche that I don’t admire, so it’s nice to know who counts themselves in it, or not.

I was having that same problem with wanting to travel – I am nesting right now as a reaction to all our Christmas travel and I don’t want to leave the house. But I want to eat amazing food in another country.

  10. Joe says:

I’d love to be a digital nomad for a while, but probably not forever. Traveling gets old after a while. I’m willing to try it, though. Once our kid goes to college, I can go. That’s a long time…

    • Revanche says:

I don’t do well being away from home more than 10 days, apparently, so I’m totally not the nomad type but I would love to meet with y’all in some fun location while you’re traveling!

  11. Linda says:

I used to travel, but the past few years I’ve had so many things keeping me at home. Now I think I’ve shifted to being a homebody. I have a business trip coming up later this month and the idea of being away from home for a full week is stressing me out.

Most of the FIRE folks I’ve read just don’t click with me, either. I can’t help but feel like they are selling that lifestyle just a little too hard. So, yeah, I enjoyed SP’s post on this topic a lot.

I get so much from the links you post and retweet. Please keep it up!

It’s been a long time since I felt like traveling was much fun and I’d really like to change that.

<3 Thanks for saying so - I often wonder if the link loves are a waste of time but this one was really popular!

  12. Carol says:

Glad to find your blog. As a retiree I love being able to enjoy the comfort of home. I’ve thought about a life on the road, but it pales quickly for me. Happy new year wishes!
