Good Things Friday (109) and Link Love

March 19, 2021

1. Finally cracked down on myself and made the pork shoulder that PiC picked up, via the magic of the Crockpot, turn into a bounty of pulled pork. I allocated it across four 3-cup Pyrex containers. We’ll have one this week and the other three will be frozen for future meals. 3 cups feels like a decent not overwhelming portion.

2. I baked a still too dense and still too crusty loaf of bread with fresh flour and yeast (the last set of ingredients was just a bit too old) and it was reasonably tasty! Now how do I get a thinner, less hard crust? I don’t want a loaf of bread that can double as a weapon. Not right now, anyway.

3. Every day that we get junk mail, I take five or ten minutes to sit down and unsubscribe (hah like I subscribed in the first place) from their mailing lists. I’m keeping track of these to see if it makes any measurable different in the junk mail we get.

Challenges this week: the uptick in attacks against Asian-Americans seems to have flared up to an even higher level in recent days and weeks. It’s hard to keep hearing “this isn’t who we are” when in fact this is very integral to America’s roots. This bizarre denial of the truth of who and what America is seems to be at least one of the barriers that prevents us from moving away from deeply embedded racism. If you can’t even admit that the past has been rife with racism then how the heck are you (and the system) going to stop BEING racist?? You can’t fix a problem you refuse to see.

Just a little link love

We’re supporting the Navajo Water Project again this year and Dig Deep also notified us that this year they are working on providing safe drinking water to families in Appalachia. I particularly like that all our donor dollars go to the water projects: “We know that every dollar you invest in our work is hard earned and thoughtfully given, so we commit 100% of every donation to water programs.A special group of donors covers our operating expenses. We call them The Water Council.

If ever I was tempted to patronize Kavasutra, now I know not to.

‘Shang-Chi’ Star Simu Liu: ‘Anti-Asian Racism Is Very Real’ (Guest Column)

We still have a long way to go but I’m having fun playing with All Options Considered’s newest FI calculator.

I love the work of saving bees that this woman is doing but her lack of protective gear is kind of freaking me out.

The real reasons the U.S. became less racist toward Asian Americans (and it’s not much less racist today!)

I want to highlight this from the TikTok above. We saw this exact thing happen in the PF community where the racist author (Fr**dom is Gr**v*) of that trash manifesto used Asians in the PF community as “proof” that there is no racism and that Black and Hispanic people aren’t disadvantaged. Because according to that garbage post, “if these Asians could do it, then those other people are just failing because they don’t try hard enough.” ALL THE EYEROLLS and rage.
